Week1- Tutespark

Tute*Spark

How do we distinguish between old and new communication technologies? Under what circumstances will new communication technologies become old communication technologies?

This question can be answered in many ways because- like technology- it is so flexible. For me i consider any past technology that i have updated on- as old. Although 'new' communication technology is the result of previous years of old technology. Its convergence, adaptions, accessibility and ever-changing styles create new models of an old invention. Take the mobile phone for instance. My gran used to have a massive brick of a phone when i was about 8, I used t dream of being important enough to need and own my own brick phone that she promised to pass down to me. When i got it at about age 15, i was amazed such a thing ever existed and that it was so ancient. It had a long arial to gain signal, it had very limited buttons, weighed a ton, only came in a shadey grey and had an LCD screen. By the time it was passed down colour screens were out, phones had cameras (still no internet, or it said it had it but it never really worked) and most importantly
phones had gotten smaller. It seemed smaller was better. I remember having a phone that was the length of my index finger!! haha it was the worst phone ever. Now Iphones and Blackberrys are in, they are pretty large and don't leave much room in anyones pocket. They are pretty heavy, break easily and do not handle water very well like the old Nokia's. So why does everyone like them? Is it an improvement of the phone or more of an adaption of a PC that includes mobile services? By joining the interiors of PC's and mobile phones, having a (in mobile term) 'large' phone does not seem uncool anymore. Instead we have a mini computer.

Apart from my ramble on, communication technologies could be classified as old during the decade they were made in, their average rate of popularity in the world, when an adaption has been made that has advanced the accessibility to communicate faster, clearer, cheaper and more frequently.

Week1- Lecture

Todays lecture in New and emerging technologies was pretty much about the subject and what we'l be doing in it. It was pretty humorous actually and very entertaining. We spoke about communication alot in every aspect and where it first started. My instant first thought was a string and cup haaaahaha. It was actually drawing :/ anywayss moving on...
We also spoke about technology, how it relates to us, what it is used for, how it has been adapted and expanded to help us in our everyday lives. I reckon technology is one of the most exciting topics to talk about, theres so many ways to go with it, we rely on it more than any other person or living creature. Convergence is also a big part of our lives as new innovations and adaptions create a device combining every element of life's 'necessities'. Older and newer communication technologies were discussed. In a few year everything will be different, everything we know now will be old.

I watched a video on youtube a few months ago about technology and how it is ever changing. It is very interesting, i think the videos from like 2009 though, which means these statistics have probably doubled...
